Apoptosis has been largely analyzed in the testis. Nevertheless, the epididymis has been scarcely studied. We analyzed the number of apoptotic cells in the different regions (caput, corpus and cauda) of the epididymis of the South American rodent Octodon degus both young and senile. Apoptosis was identified using the TUNEL method which detects in situ DNA fragmentation. Apoptosis was detected in the principal cells of the epididymal epithelium. The caput epididymis was the region more affected. The caput of young animals showed that 0.32/1000 cells were apoptotic in contrast to 5.1/1000 of senile animals. Also in the cauda epididymis apoptosis is increased with age, appearing 0.14/1000 and 3.9/1000 in young and senile animals, respectively. On the other... |

The reproductive system of male Phrynops geoffroanus adults is macroscopically described and the variation in testicular biometry is evaluated. A pair of oval testes is connected by the efferent ductules to the epididymis, which continue as deferent ducts, which emerge in the penis. The volume of the gonads showed the highest averages during spring and summer months. GSI varied significantly throughout the year, with the highest averages observed in the months that correspond to the end of spring and the beginning of summer, when the reproduction of the species takes place, and the lowest averages were seen in winter, suggesting a cyclical testicular activity. |

Sesamin is a major lignan constituent of sesame seed and considered as a key factor in a number of beneficial effects on human health. Sesame leaves intake improve and increase epididymal spermatocytes reserve in adult male sprague dawley rat. The present study was aimed to investigate the effects of contain sesame seed on epididymis histologhical structure. Thirty adult male rats were divided into two groups of 15 rats each. The regimen group received diet containing 30% sesame seed, while the control group received diet along 12 weeks. The right epididymis were removed and minced into several pieces on a specimen bottle containing normal saline for some few minutes to allow the sperms to become motile and swim out and sperm parameters were analyzed. Studies on testes and epididymis tissue of rats treated orally for fourteen days with therapeutic doses of cloxacillin (6mg/100g/day), ampicillin (4mg/100/day) and tetracycline (12mg/100g/day) separately showed a significant reduction in testicular and epididimis architecture. Microscopic studies of these male reproductive organs further revealed a significant alteration in the epididymis as revealed by a significant reduction (p<0.05) in epididymal ductular diameter (EDD), and epididymal epithelial height (EEH) in treated group of animals. A significant increase (p<0.05) was however recorded in epididymal luminal diameter (ELD) in all the animals after the two and three week's recovery period allowed. This gives another insight into the toxicity... |

The present research aimed to describe possible histopathological alterations in the reproductive system (testicles and epididymis) of male dogs experimentally infected with Toxoplasma gondii. Canines (n=10) serologically negative for T. gondii were selected and distributed into three experimental groups: GI, 3 inoculated with 2.0 x 10(5)P strain oocysts; GII, 3 infected with 1.0 x 10(6)RH strain tachyzoites; and GIII, 4 control dogs. Antibody research (IFAT) against T. gondii was realized. Toxoplasma gondii infection was confirmed by seroconversion of the 6 males infected with tachyzoites and oocysts from postinoculation day (PID) 7 and 14, respectively. At PID 70, all dogs were submitted to orchiectomy and testicle and epididymis samples were collected... |

The general aim of this paper was to characterize some changes induced by androgen receptors blockage in the epithelial cells of the mouse epididymis. The antiandrogen flutamide was injected (10 mg/Kg b.w.) to adult male mice which were sacrificed 24h. and 72h. after. Controls injected with the vehicle (corn oil) were sacrificed at the same intervals. Cryosections were made of the epididymides and examined by the TUNEL method for quantification of apoptosis and also using immunocytochemistry to visualize the expression of the stress protein HSP70. The highest indexes of apoptosis were observed in the caput epididymis after 72 h. and were of 7.40 cells/1000 in contrast to controls (0.21 cells/1000). HSP70 appeared particularly increased in the caput and... |

The epithelial principal cells are the predominant cell type of the epididymis. These cells have been shown to be both secretory and endocytic cells. The apical region of the cytoplasm of principal cells in the mongrel dog are located close to the cell apex and tubular lumen, and shown microvilli at the luminal border and present a endocytic apparatus, that consists of coated pits and vesicles, endosomes of varying size, multivesicular bodies, and lysosomes. The endosomes, multivesicular bodies and lysosomes contained the electron-dense patches. These results suggest that principal cells of the epididymis in the dog as possess a highly developed endocytic apparatus play a role in endocytosis. These cells function are similarly to the related in other... |

ABSTRACT: Preservation and use of spermatozoa that have been recovered after death can extend the use of genetically superior animals. The objective of this study was to evaluate the maximum period for which ovine spermatozoa could be successfully stored in refrigerated dilution medium post-mortem, with or without added seminal plasma. Three samples of spermatozoa collected in an artificial vagina from 10 rams, or from the tails of four epididymes from the same rams at the time of death (G0) and six (G6), twelve (G12), twenty-four (G24) and forty-eight (G48) hours after death were used. After recovery, the spermatozoa were refrigerated at 5°C in either control medium (CM) or control medium plus 20%homologous seminal plasma (SP) and evaluated for 72 hours... |

The study revealed that the testes of one-day-old Gaddi goats have descended in the scrotum along with adnexa. They were elongated compressed latero-medially and became ovoid during their postnatal growth and morphogenesis. The two testes were not different significantly in their weight and measurement. The average weight which was about 2.9 gm at birth grew to 107 gm (40X) in pubertal animals and nearly maintained it during the post-puberty (113 g). The mean length (1.46 cm), width (0.85 cm) and thickness (0.62 cm) also grew by 47, 60, and 83 times, respectively. In post-pubertal animals it measured 7.06 x 5.20 x 5.10 cm. The study indicated a very fast growth of the testes from birth to puberty, which did not alter significantly after that. A relatively... |

In order to evaluate the post-thaw effect on acrosomal viability and reaction of sperm collected from equine epididymis tail, 62 testes were collected and transported at 4°C. Epididymis was dissected to perform the retrograde flushing of the epididymis tail , using 10 mL of a diluent based on skim milk (INRA 82). The diluent obtained with the spermatic content was recovered in graduated collecting tubes and 1mL of each sample was taken to be evaluated. For evaluations, the samples having a minimum of 30% of progressive motility were selected. The evaluations were on: percentage of live sperm, normal morphology, sperm concentration, percentage of live sperm without acrosomal reaction (VsRA) and live with acrosomal reaction (VcRA), evaluating this indicator... |

Reproductive tract of 12 camels (Camelus dromedarius) were used to evaluate testicular morphometry. The testicular morphometric characteristics measured were scrotal circumference (in situ), paired testis weight, epididymal weight and mean epididymal length, testis volume, and testis density. There were no significant difference (p >0.05) between the left and right organs, but there were numerical differences between all the parameters. A highly significant positive correlations (p <0.05, p <0.01, p <0.001) exist between the scrotal circumference, testicular and epididymal morphometry, except for testis density which is non- significant (p >0.05). It was concluded that testicular morphometry would provide reliable information in... |

The present study was conducted to measure various biometric parameters of intact/normal acrosomes (AC) collected respectively from caput, corpus and cauda epididymis and vas deferens of Black Bengal buck. Giemsa stained acrosomes were measured after camera lucida drawings. Observations revealed dimensional characters of the acrosomal cap diminished gradually and significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05) during spermatozoa maturation phases in the different regions of the excurrent duct. Shape and size of the AC were also found to be influenced significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05) by the age and body weight of the animals. The structural modification along with decrease in the morphology of the AC reflected one of the maturational indexes of the male gametes in... |
